Respect Doesn’t Require An Offer

You don’t have to hire someone to make them feel valued. That’s an important distinction in recruiting. Not every candidate will be qualified. Not every interview will go well. Not every person will be the right fit for the position. That’s hiring.

But none of those things excuse treating people poorly. Someone can be completely wrong for your open position and still deserve a professional, respectful experience. Maybe they’re missing a required skill. Maybe another candidate has more relevant experience. Maybe the position changed. Maybe the chemistry simply isn’t there. You don’t need to manufacture a reason to move someone forward. You just need to communicate honestly and respectfully.

After more than 20 years in the people business, I’ve learned that people remember how organizations handle the moments that don’t go their way. The offer is easy. The rejection is where your process is really tested.

You don’t have to give every candidate a job.

But you can give every candidate a good experience.
